Аннотация

The article presents the results of a research project focused on the role of cultural mediators in legal proceedings involving migrants in contemporary Russia. In their interaction with Russian legal institutions migrants have to rely on cultural mediators such as legal interpreters. The empirical base of the study is qualitative data from research of criminal and administrative trials in several Russian cities (St.-Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod). Special attention is devoted to the functions of legal interpreters, their formal and informal interactions with litigants and investigators. In the situation of absence of professional associations, the boundaries of competence of interpreters are blurred and depend on various factors – from legality of their status to their ability to resist outside pressure. As a result, different roles are being practiced. Yet multiplicity of conflicting roles leads to confusion among users of interpreting services and to insecurity for interpreters. The article analyzes models of behavior of legal interpreters and tactics they use within the juridical field.
