Аннотация

The purpose of this article is to describe various types of risks and risk-taking when launching family business in Russia during transition 2000-2015. The article describes various risks when launching a business in Saint Petersburg during transition. In particular, the text focusses on shuttle trade and the risks related to it, as well risks of criminality and corruption. The findings point out the fragility of small family businesses and life in transition in general, reflected also in a certain neglect towards future at personal and business level. This fragility may be due to the initial stage of the entrepeneurship but reflects also political and economic reality. The findings cannot be generalized, but they highlight important aspects of emerging small family business in Russia. It would be most useful to carry out qualitative follow-up studies of small businesses to assess the factors contributing or hampering their sustainability in societies of transformation, and also utilize comparative data from other countries.
